Coastal structures in Sydney have been flooded and coastal infrastructure damaged by a powerful high tide that hit the Australian coast, authorities said.
NSW Emergency Services spokesman Andrew Edmunds said several homes in Botany Bay, southern Sydney, had to be evacuated around midnight as waves crashed onto the coast.
To the north, at Sydney's famous Bondi Beach, a wave of 18 feet was observed, officials said.
Windows were smashed at the Bondi Icebergs swim club, which includes a pool, gym and waterfront restaurant.
Footage showed waves crashing through glass doors just after 11pm on Tuesday (1pm BST).
The club's general manager Bob Tate commented: “It's just awful.”
