After days of fighting, calm has returned to the border between India and Pakistan

Indian and Pakistani officials said there was no shooting overnight in the heavily militarized zone between their countries, the first time in recent days that the two countries have not exchanged fire.

India and Pakistan agreed on Saturday to halt all military operations on land, air and sea as part of a US-brokered ceasefire to stop escalating hostilities between the two nuclear powers that threaten regional peace.

In a statement, the Indian military said: “The night was generally calm across Jammu and Kashmir and other areas along the international border,” adding that no incident was reported.

Top military commanders from India and Pakistan are due to speak later on Monday to assess the ceasefire, which had been feared to be broken after both sides accused each other of violations just hours after it was declared.

Local officials in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir reported no incidents of firing along the Line of Control and said civilians displaced by recent clashes between Pakistani and Indian troops were returning.

Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, a spokesman for the Pakistan military, said Sunday evening that Pakistan continues to adhere to the ceasefire and would not be the first to violate it.

He also confirmed that senior military commanders from both countries would continue their telephone talks on Monday.
