Will Ukraine be able to shoot down Oreshnik missiles – expert opinion

In Ukraine, there are currently and in the near future no means to shoot down the Russian ballistic missile “Oreshnik”. What theoretically can be tried to do this, said Oleg Katkov, editor-in-chief of the military-political portal Defense Express.

Main theses:

  • Ukraine currently does not have the means to shoot down Oreshnik missiles, but theoretically this is possible with ship-based missiles and anti-missile systems from other countries.
  • The chief expert noted that to effectively shoot down the Oreshnik, it is necessary to hit the missile before its warheads separate in space.

Ukraine does not have the means to shoot down “Oreshnik”, but there is one but — Katkov

The expert noted that the Oreshnik is a medium-range ballistic missile with separate warheads. It must be hit before it separates – in space.

Theoretically, it can be shot down by Standard Missile 3 ship-based missiles and the Israeli Arrow 3 missile defense system. But the question is when exactly the missile's warheads are deployed and whether it is within the range of these complexes.

Officially, the parameters of neither the SM-3 nor the Arrow 3 have been disclosed, so it is impossible to accurately assess them… Theoretically, it is possible (to shoot down), but practically, it depends on many parameters.

At the same time, he emphasizes: Ukraine is currently unable to shoot down the “Oreshnik”. Theoretically, the Defense Forces could shoot down separate blocks of this Patriot SAM missile, but from a practical point of view, this is “very doubtful”, he notes.

Patriot is a means against tactical and operational-tactical ballistic missiles, such as the Iskander. For medium-range missiles, other systems are needed: THAAD, SM-6, SM-3.

The Security Service of Ukraine previously reported that fragments of the Oreshnik missile were found in the Lviv region. According to the investigation, the launch was carried out from the Kapustin Yar test site near the Caspian Sea, and the target was civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian intelligence claims that the missile has six warheads, each carrying six submunitions.
