At the World Defense Show 2026, which is taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Ukrainian multi-caliber air defense system “Shorshen” was presented.

Main theses:

  • The Radionics company developed the Ukrainian multi-caliber Shershen air defense system, which is part of the National Association of the Defense Industry of Ukraine.
  • The Shershen air defense system has been tested on five types of missiles, including radar stations of various origins, which allows avoiding dependence on a single supplier.

A multi-caliber air defense complex project was developed in Ukraine

The main developer and integrator of solutions is the company “Radionics”, which is part of the National Association of the Defense Industry of Ukraine (NAUDI).

The Shershen anti-aircraft missile system has been tested on five types of missiles. These include Soviet missiles, foreign-made missiles, and promising Ukrainian-made missiles.

This eliminates dependence on one supplier, because they work in a competitive environment and want to tie the customer to themselves for decades. And then a situation arises when, conditionally, there are launchers, but there are no missiles and the volume of rocket production, firstly, is small, and secondly, they are getting more and more expensive every year, – said NAUDI Director Serhiy Goncharov.

Model of the “Shershen” air defense system

In general, the Shershen anti-aircraft missile system includes:

  • radar station control point,

  • launchers,

  • starting and charging machines,

  • transport and loading machines

The launcher is proposed by analogy with the Israeli Barak air defense system, when the launcher is removed from the vehicle using a “multilift” system and left on the ground as a separate autonomous object.

The complex is not tied to a specific radar station.

The radar can be adapted to the complex, according to the customer's wishes. That is, there is no such rigid binding that there should be only Thales, or there should be only HENSOLDT, or there should be Teledyne, Girafe, some other radar. That is, all this can be adapted and the control system, it is very flexible, and at least three times cheaper than the world one.

The “Shershen” air defense system can also work with the “Krechet” system, which also receives information from other radars and sources of air target detection.

The technical characteristics of the range of destruction depend on the specific missile that the complex will use. For example, the launcher model in the transport position shows R-27 missiles, in the R-27ET1 variant with a thermal homing head used on the Indian Samar-2 air defense system, where the range of destruction of an air target does not exceed 20 kilometers.

According to the missile capabilities, the complex is a short-range complex by analogy with the German IRIS-T SLM or the Norwegian-American NASAMS.
