Chatbot gave EU diplomats advice. They told it to pretend to be British PM Starmer

European diplomats spoke to a chatbot that simulated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in preparation for negotiations on agreements including trade, the Telegraph reported on Tuesday. The artificial intelligence model was used to predict the head of government's possible reactions.

Officials from the Spanish and Slovenian governments were reportedly asked hundreds of questions by a “digital clone” of Starmer using the website Nostrada.ai, a British technology company that uses artificial intelligence to allow users to simulate conversations with any of the 650 MPs in the House of Commons.

The Telegraph reported that European diplomats interacted with a chatbot to test the British prime minister’s potential responses to concessions on the fishing agreement and youth mobility. Hundreds of messages were exchanged between the bot and officials, as if they were reenacting a bilateral meeting with the prime minister, and they also asked about his position.

The conclusion of agreements between the EU and the UK was not a foregone conclusion until the last few hours.

Ultimately, on Monday during the summit in London, an agreement was signed on fisheries, which provides for full mutual access to waters for fishing purposes until June 30, 2038. The current agreement, concluded when the UK left the EU in 2020, expires in June 2026. During the negotiations, London wanted to extend the agreement for another four years, Brussels – for seven years.

During the meeting of EU leaders with the head of the British government, it was also announced that Great Britain will start talks on launching a mobility program for citizens of EU countries up to the age of 30, which will enable them to travel, study and work in the United Kingdom.

The newspaper reported that work is currently underway to create a chatbot that will help Europeans conduct negotiations with the administration of US President Donald Trump. It is also considering creating “digital clones” of Russian leader Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong-un. (PAP)
