Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid ahead of Club World Cup

Liverpool reached an agreement for the transfer of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid on June 1.

The new Premier League champions confirmed that terms for his move to Real had been agreed before his Liverpool contract expires on June 30, with Real saying it would allow the England international to compete in this summer's Club World Cup.

The Reds clarified that the 26-year-old's transfer fee was paid at the start of June, not July 1, and Real announced that Alexander-Arnold had signed a six-year contract.

A Liverpool statement said: “Alexander-Arnold joined the club's academy at the age of six and gradually progressed to making his senior debut in October 2016.

“He now leaves Anfield after 354 appearances and 23 goals for the club, and after winning eight major trophies with the team, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup and two League Cups.

“Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool Football Club with a deep sense of gratitude for his contribution to these achievements.”

According to PA, Liverpool will receive £10m from the transfer – a combination of Real's €10m (£8.4m) fee for Alexander-Arnold's early signing and four weeks' wages saved on the player.

Sources close to the Merseyside club claim Real first showed interest in the player in December last year and the club's football department have been keen to protect his interests ever since.

The funds raised will obviously prove beneficial to Liverpool, as Real were reportedly only planning to pay £850,000 to complete the deal before the player's contract with Liverpool expired.

On May 5, Alexander-Arnold confirmed his intention to leave
