Son Heung-min: Tottenham Hotspur captain leaves Premier League as legend. But who can Tottenham Hotspur replace him with?

Son Heung-min has signed for Los Angeles City from Tottenham Hotspur for £20m. The South Korean has made his mark at both Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League, with Thomas Frank describing him as one of the best wingers in the history of the top flight.

“Yay, Son is crying” is the meme that has followed Heung-min Son's career at Tottenham. Last week, the tears were shed by those around the South Korean.

Emotions ran high as the final whistle blew in Seoul on Sunday as the Tottenham captain took to the pitch for the final time in a club uniform.

Ben Davies, who called Son the godfather of his son Ralph, broke down in tears as he said goodbye to his friend. Other teammates were also emotional, with members of the Spurs media crying on the pitch as they awaited the 33-year-old's next adventure with LAFC.

Son expressed his delight at his move to Los Angeles FC and noted that he needed a new challenge after his time at Tottenham Hotspur.

But Son was not only the captain and leader of Tottenham. “Sonny is Tottenham and Tottenham is Sonny,” James Maddison noted before his teammate’s final. During his ten years at the club, Son won the affections of the Spurs: players, coaches, fans and even opponents.

Firstly, Son is a player who leaves the Premier League as one of the greatest ever to play overseas. “In my opinion, he is one of the best players ever to play in the Premier League as a winger,” Thomas Frank said when Son confirmed his departure.

The facts bear this out. If Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne are the two most outstanding players to have played in the Premier League over the past decade, then Son could easily be third or fourth on that list.

Son ended his Premier League career with more goals than De Bruyne, who spent the same number of years in England's top flight as the South Korean.

And his goals over the years have also been momentous. He opened the scoring for the new Tottenham Hotspur era at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Crystal Palace. His Golden Boot-winning season was capped by a brace against Norwich, which earned him a standing ovation from the home crowd off the pitch.

There were also nine goals in the North London derby against Arsenal.

In Europe, he scored twice in the first 10 minutes of a Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City in April 2019. Harry Kane was absent through injury that night, but Son came on and Tottenham memorably advanced on away goals.
