Ireland and Leinster second-choice defender Joe McCarthy has signed a new three-year deal that will keep him in Ireland until 2028.
McCarthy was promoted to a central contract after successful spells with Island and Leinster.
Since making his debut for Ireland against Australia in 2022, he has played 17 international matches.
He played a vital role in Ireland's campaign to win the 2024 Guinness Six Nations and became the youngest player on the IRFU's central contract system.
He has made 42 appearances for Leinster since making his debut in 2022.
McCarthy said: “I am delighted to be continuing my association with Leinster and Ireland and believe there is much to come as we move towards an exciting end to the season and beyond. Playing for my home province is a pleasure and the honour of representing my country means the world to me.”
“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates and coaches for their support and help, and I am sure there will be more to come as we move forward together.”
Speaking about McCarthy, IRFU Director of Performance David Humphreys said: “Joe has quickly established himself as a key player for Leinster and Island and we are delighted that he has agreed this new three-year contract.
“His work ethic, physicality and talent have cemented his reputation both at club and country and it is a significant development for Irish rugby that one of the best young talents has committed his long-term future to this club.”
Leinster currently have 11 of their 14 players on central contracts.
Bandi Aki and Mac Hansen are Connacht players, while Munster's Tadhg Beirne has a central contract.
At present, no Ulster player has a central contract.
