On Saturday, April 4, the legendary former goalkeeper of the Bulgarian national team and former president of the country's football union, Borislav Mikhailov, who died at the age of 63 from the consequences of a stroke, reports BNT 1. Earlier it became known that another legend of Bulgarian football is fighting for his life in a clinic in Germany.

Mikhailov had been in the hospital since late November of last year. In recent weeks, his condition was critical, he fell into a coma and, despite the efforts of doctors, never came back to life.

The son of the famous Levski goalkeeper Biser Mikhailov, he was one of the best players in the history of the Bulgarian national team. Between 1983 and 1998, he played 102 matches for the national team. At the same time, the goalkeeper took to the field with the captain's armband in 60 matches – a record for the Bulgarian national team.

Mikhailov was the captain of the “golden generation” of the national team at the 1994 World Cup, where the Bulgarians sensationally took fourth place. In the round of 16 match against Mexico, the goalkeeper prevented the opponents from scoring three times in the post-match penalty shootout.

At the club level, Mikhailov left a bright mark in the Levski team, where he played from 1981 to 1989, played 243 matches and won the Bulgarian championship and the Bulgarian Cup three times. In 1986, he was recognized as the best football player in the country. The goalkeeper also managed to play for Belenenses (Portugal), Mulhouse (France), Reading (England), as well as the Bulgarian Botev, Slavia and Swiss Zurich.

After his playing career, Mikhailov served as president of the Bulgarian Football Union from 2005 to 2019 and 2021 to 2023, and was also elected a member of the UEFA Executive Committee in 2011.

By the way, Borislav's son, 37-year-old Nikolai Mikhailov, was also a famous goalkeeper, defending the colors of clubs from Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, and Cyprus, and also playing 45 matches for the country's national team.
