Sumy State University actively uses artificial intelligence in the educational process, in particular, thanks to AI, the educational institution checks student tests and counteracts plagiarism. In July 2025, Sumy State University developed a document regulating the use of AI, but the latest technologies began to be used here even earlier.
This was reported to Delo.ua by the head of the Center for Computer Technologies of Sumy State University, Andriy Piven .
According to him, Sumy State University has introduced the nomination “Use of AI in the educational process” as part of the competition for teachers since 2019. At the same time, this year the university developed the document “Policy for the use of artificial intelligence at SumSU”. It has already been approved by the academic council and the order of the rector Vasyl Karpusha. This document regulates the limits of the use of artificial intelligence for teachers and students of SumSU.
“The Department of Computer Science is actively developing the direction of artificial intelligence: it has a specialized laboratory, scientific research, and startup initiatives. Departments of economic profile are also involved in AI activities. And the Department of Germanic Philology organized training seminars for teachers of the Sumy region,” notes Andriy Piven.
He specifies that SumDU has a corporate subscription to Copilot, Gimini, Grammarly, and other AI tools. The document itself states that students and teachers can use a large number of relevant programs, except for those created in the aggressor country.
Artificial intelligence at the university is allowed to be used to formulate research questions, conduct brainstorming, generate hypotheses and proposals for methodology. AI also helps in checking tests and plagiarism of papers.
“In scientific publications and research, the fact of using AI must be clearly declared: indicating the tool, type of query, volume of generated text, and level of authorial refinement. The lack of such attribution may be considered a violation of academic integrity,” the document states.
At the same time, AI is not recommended for use:
- When making complaints, appeals or requests.
- For mass or covert surveillance of employees and students.
- Unsafe or insecure AI tools that threaten data security.
- Being dependent on a single AI provider with no fallback options.
Recall that almost 80% of companies want to retrain employees to work with AI .
