The Defense Department on Friday made public unclassified UFO documents from diverse federal entities, with some going back to the latter part of the 1940s.

The records, which the Defense Department mentioned encompass “never-before-seen” archives on unidentified aerial objects—termed unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) by the U.S. authorities—were being uploaded onto a new official website.

“The American populace can now gain access to the federal government’s declassified UAP documents right away. The most recent UAP videos, images, and initial source materials from all over the United States government are compiled in one spot—no permission is needed,” the Defense Department stated in a public release.

The agency communicated it will be distributing additional records “on a continuing schedule.”

Many of the noted occurrences of unidentified flying objects were concentrated close to active military actions, as per the records assessed by ABC News.

A considerable segment of the alleged happenings are traced back to the 1950s and 1960s, most notably in Cold War-era hotspots such as Germany and the Soviet Union, based on the papers. More current reports are focused in the Middle East—including in proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, Iraq, and Syria—where the U.S. has kept a sizeable military existence and some of its most cutting-edge monitoring resources.

The clustering of sightings adjacent to military activity is mainly an indication of where the Defense Department is allocating its most sophisticated apparatus and undertaking regular assignments. The bulk of documented sightings originate from military airmen, according to the data.

Across all documented cases, the airborne phenomena displayed no obvious danger, with the majority of encounters ending after the mysterious aircraft swiftly departed.

A noteworthy occurrence unfolded over a two-day span in the western region of the U.S. in 2023, based on the records. During that episode, federal law enforcement agents separately documented peculiar occurrences concerning orbs, with one agent reporting “orbs propelling other orbs.”

The Defense Department considers this “among the most convincing” of the records it possesses.

An occurrence in Iraq in 2024 similarly reported a puzzling aircraft speeding across a U.S. aircraft’s monitoring devices at rapid velocity whilst that team was engaging a separate target.

In a narrative from 2025 that a senior intelligence official relayed to the FBI, U.S. government representatives embarked on a hunt for orbs in areas where they had previously been sighted.

“After examining the vicinity by helicopter, they identified a ‘super-hot’ orb suspended above the ground. The orb reportedly traversed for 20 miles at a velocity exceeding the chase helicopter’s capabilities,” the government details in its explanation of the FBI account.

In NASA transcripts dating back to 1969 included in this release, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin conveyed to the authorities that he observed a “potential laser” in space.

“I noticed something that looked like a quite intense light source, and we provisionally characterized it as a probable laser,” he remarked.

One striking image portrays a composite outline created by the FBI illustrating “an apparent ellipsoid bronze metallic object emerging from a radiant light in the sky, spanning 130-195 feet in length, and vanishing instantly.”

A composite outline developed by the FBI depicts “an apparent ellipsoid bronze metallic object materializing from a brilliant light in the sky, stretching 130-195 feet, and disappearing instantaneously.” The image draws from an “actual field photograph” with illustrative components stemming from “supporting eyewitness accounts” dating back to September of 2023, according to the government.FBI

In a statement, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth hailed the release as “unmatched openness.” Certain files feature considerable omissions, including numerous documents where complete pages are obscured.

Nevertheless, Sean Kirkpatrick, the former director of the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, cautioned against reaching rash judgments based on the new distribution.

“There’s nothing surprising in the distribution, and lacking analysis or perspective, it will merely serve to stimulate additional theorizing, conspiracy beliefs, and informal pseudoscience, notably from the dramatic political arena,” Kirkpatrick articulated in a statement to ABC News.

The distribution aligns with President Donald Trump's declaration earlier in the year, where he commanded agencies to reveal documents pertaining to unidentified flying objects, unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), and “extraterrestrial beings.”

Certain segments within the archives are concealed; however, this marks the inaugural instance of complete case documents being shared. In recent times, the AARO has undertaken a reassessment of these historical documents and disseminated public summaries and evaluations to the community.

Up until this moment, none of their evaluations have unearthed anything leading them to determine that UFOs or UAPs possess an extraterrestrial foundation.

Trump commended the Pentagon’s disclosure of the first allocation of UFO files on Friday, asserting his role in providing transparency to the citizens of America.

“In pursuit of Utmost and Absolute Clarity, it was my Privilege to instruct my Administration to pinpoint and make available Government records tied to Alien and Extraterrestrial Existence, Unidentified Aerial Occurrences, and Unidentified Flying Objects,” Trump articulated via his social networking platform.

Trump further added that this documentation distribution will enable the American populace to “judge for themselves” the implications of the reported occurrences.

For weeks, the president has alluded to the disclosure of official records pertaining to UFOs and UAPs.

“Well, I expect that we'll be disseminating as much as we’re able to in the approaching period. For whatever cause, and I suppose there is a cause, this has remained within the contemplation of people for a considerable duration,” Trump conveyed last month when greeting the Artemis II astronauts in the Oval Office.
