By this coming December, young males in America will be enrolled automatically in the military conscription roster via a statute enacted into law the previous December, solidifying a procedure that’s already in place across much of the nation.
This provision was incorporated into the yearly National Defense Authorization Act, essential legislation that defines the Pentagon’s financial plan and policy objectives, and it bears no relevance to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
This adjustment comes after years of discussion in Congress regarding the manner, or even the advisability, of modifying draft registration, a framework the U.S. has not employed since 1973, following its transition to a completely volunteer armed force.
Legislators have been at odds, with certain individuals advocating for extending registration to encompass women, while others contend that the entire system should be abolished.

For a century, males aged 18 to 25, including the majority of immigrants, have been obligated to enroll for the draft manually, generally through a government website or at the nearby bureau of motor vehicles, with varying degrees of adherence, according to federal statistics.
The Selective Service System, which oversees the conscription pool, has a yearly budget of $30 million, dedicating a significant portion of that towards outreach endeavors and various promotional initiatives.
Automated enrollment is already practiced, to some extent, in 46 states and territories, such as when a male obtains a driver’s license, as indicated by information from the Selective Service System.
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, a Democrat from Pennsylvania who proposed the amendment together with Rep. Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, expressed in 2024 that automated registration “saves substantial funds for taxpayers and simplifies the process for these individuals to abide by the law and enlist with the Selective Service.”
The Selective Service System approximates that the novel platform will require about $6 million to construct the computerized system.
