Republicans Call on Donald Trump and Elon Musk to End Feud

Republicans, concerned about the potential fallout from the protracted conflict between US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, are calling for reconciliation.

At the very least, an escalation of the feud between the two powerful figures could make it harder for Republicans to pass significant tax and border spending legislation that Mr. Trump has pushed but Mr. Musk has criticized.

US Vice President JD Vance said Mr Musk was making a “huge mistake” by attacking Mr Trump.

In an interview published on Friday following a public spat between the world's richest man and arguably its most powerful, he also sought to downplay Mr Musk's harsh outbursts, calling them those of an “emotional person” who was upset.

“I hope that eventually Elon will come back into society. It may not be possible now because he has gone so nuclear,” Mr. Vance said.

Mr. Vance's remarks come amid calls from other Republicans in recent days for the two men, who were close allies and spent much time together months ago, to patch up their differences.

“I hope this doesn't distract us from doing the work we need to do,” said Rep. Dan Newhouse, a Washington Republican. “I think it will bubble up and they'll make peace.”

As of Friday afternoon, Mr. Musk had kept his attacks to a minimum, posting about his various companies on social media rather than attacking the president. Mr. Trump left the White House for his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, without stopping to answer questions from reporters who were shouting about his conflict with Mr. Musk.

“I hope that they both get back together because when they work together, we can do a lot more for America than when they are in conflict,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

Senator Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, sounded almost upset on social media as Mr Trump and Mr Musk traded insults, sharing a photo of the two men together and writing: “But… I like them both very much.”

“Who else actually wants @elonmusk and @realDonaldTrump to make peace?” Mr Lee wrote, later adding: “Repost if you agree the world would be a better place if Trump and Musk’s friendship had continued
