The European Union's executive Commission has announced a 90-day pause on retaliatory measures against new U.S. tariffs, to align with President Donald Trump's temporary pause on his sweeping new tariffs and to create space for a negotiated deal.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the commission, which represents the trade interests of the 27 member states, had “taken into account President Trump's statement.”
In her comments, she said new tariffs on €20.9bn (£17.9bn) worth of US goods would be delayed for 90 days because “we want to give negotiations room”.
However, Ms von der Leyen warned: “If the negotiations do not lead to a result, our countermeasures will come into force.”
Mr Trump has imposed a 20 per cent tariff on EU goods as part of his campaign to impose tariffs on global trading partners, but said he would suspend them for 90 days to allow countries to find solutions to US trade issues.
