A landslide has hit a Swiss Alpine village that was evacuated days earlier.

A huge mass of rocks and ice has damaged a village in the Swiss Alps, which authorities evacuated earlier this month as a precaution.

Social media posts show a rumbling landslide near Blatten, in the southern Lotschental valley. Photos from the scene show some houses partially submerged.

In recent days, authorities have ordered the evacuation of about 300 people and all livestock from the village amid fears that the 1.5 million cubic metre glacier above the village could collapse.

A spokesman for the crisis centre in Lotschental, Jonas Jeitziner, said local authorities were heading to the scene to assess the damage and find out if there were any casualties.

In 2023, residents of the village of Brienz in eastern Switzerland were evacuated before a huge mass of rocks slid down a mountainside, landing near the village. Brienz was evacuated again last year because of the threat of another landslide.
