When Robert Vilalta and Samuel Smith start canvassing the neighbors in their Los Angeles neighborhood, things quickly turn awkward. The pair are trying to pinpoint the source of a certain sound: the intermittent beeping that a smoke alarm makes when its battery is running low. It’s not in their building, but it’s been heard every night—and it’s driving one of them crazy. Finding the source is no easy task in their dense neighborhood of bungalows and apartment buildings, and tracking it down requires knocking on doors, introducing themselves to strangers in English or Spanish, and explaining why they’re there to investigate—without becoming the problem themselves. In the process, they meet a diverse group of neighbors. Some hate the sounds, too; some have never noticed them. Some laugh off their endeavors; others are hostile or refuse to engage at all. By figuring out where the sound signals are coming from, Robert and Samuel end up finding unexpected ways to connect with their community and rethink their place in it.
