Animals that display human traits often become the subject of fables that are meant to convey moral lessons. But in this work by Japanese-American poet and illustrator Haruki Aoki, the cat is, thankfully, just a cat. In their first cover for the June 16, 2025 issue, Aoki celebrates the playful and quirky nature of the animal. They describe their illustration, based on their experiences as cat sitters, as “a meditation on strength, love, and responsibility (or lack thereof).”
