At age 95, Katherine Kuehn set a world record in powerlifting. “It was pretty easy for me,” she says with a smile, “because no one my age had ever done it.” Grandma Strong, a documentary short by Cecilia Brown and Winslow Crane-Murdock, shows Kuehn preparing for what may be her final competition. (Kuehn, 95 when filmed, is now 97.) We watch Kuehn in the gym, working on her deadlift, her hips moving with precision—her goal for the upcoming competition is to lift 100 pounds. She trains with her training partner, Peggy; we see the pair together at competitions, wearing their singlets (“not very flattering,” Kuehn notes), sharing baked goods and commentary. Kuehn came to the world of powerlifting at an advanced age. She took up the sport in her early 80s, with her late husband, Dick. Her story is one of the life-giving power of connections, as well as resilience and athleticism. “When you have a soulmate who supports you, you just have to do it. You just have to do it.”
