You exit the driveway, pick up cruising speed — and immediately bump into someone's back. The person in front is hung up on his phone and can barely move his feet. You overtake, mentally cursing everyone who walks “foot for foot,” informs Ukr.Media.
I see this picture all the time: people running down the sidewalks as if the country's economy depends on their pace. But it's not about leadership at all.
Good news: you're healthier than you think
Doctors like to say that stride rate is a free fitness test. Do you like to pound the pedal to the floor with your two toes? Your body loves it.
The heart pumps blood, the blood vessels work. This is normal everyday cardio instead of a boring treadmill. The brain is also not far behind: try maneuvering in a crowd without normal coordination. From the side it looks like you are a very collected person with a bunch of plans. Even if you are just flying for bread.
Realities of life: why we are actually rushing somewhere
Nobody thinks about the health of their blood vessels when they rush to the subway. We're just used to it. Some people simply can't do anything else – their legs get tangled, they lose their balance, and walking slowly is uncomfortable.
Speed has become armor. We save time, which is always in short supply. Only here there is a trick. Often this eternal marathon is not from an excess of energy, but from a background neurosis. We run because we are afraid to stop and face our own thoughts. And then our joints or heart simply say: “We have arrived.” And we have to brake forcibly.
How to get the most out of your walk (and not be nervous)
No breathing practices or meditations.
Buy proper shoes. If you're already flying on asphalt, don't do it in sneakers with thin soles. Your knees will still be needed. Two stops on foot in comfortable sneakers will replace half of your fitness.
Get rid of “telephone zombies.” Those who crawl and scroll the tape will not disappear anywhere. They are just obstacles on the road. They drove around and drove on. Wasting your nerves on someone else's slowness is a luxury you cannot afford.
Distinguish drive from panic. It's one thing to go fast because you have the strength and the mood. It's another to rush with a contorted face because it seems like everything around you is on fire. Do you feel like everything inside is constricted from tension? Slow down. The world won't fall apart if you arrive two minutes late.
Listen to your body. If you feel short of breath or pain, slow down. You don't need to prove anything to anyone. Walking should work for you, not finish you off at the end of the workday.
A brisk walk is a great basic option for your body. Use it, save on gym memberships, but slow down sometimes. Just to make sure you're in control of your legs, not your anxiety.
