Hotel scrambled eggs are the star of the morning. I've always looked at that perfect yellow mass on buffets with a slight suspicion. It looked too unnatural.
Now there's proof. Hotel employee Elizabeth Emmert showed off her entire “kitchen” on TikTok. No frying pans or fresh produce.
A sealed plastic bag of frozen pre-made food is taken. It is thrown into the microwave. Then the bag is cut open. A spongy, watery substance falls out. Elizabeth simply kneads it with a spoon so that the piece resembles a crumbly omelet. That's it. Breakfast is served.
The comments under the video were predictably filled with disgust. People vowed never to touch it again. The only consolation: if you see a chef frying an omelette right in front of you at breakfast, you're in luck. The rest is a microwave illusion.
But there's not much time to be outraged. Hotels are cutting costs hard. Prices are rising, people are going on vacation less, so feeding them for free is becoming unprofitable. The Hyatt chain has already canceled free breakfasts at 40 of its locations.
The era of free hotel breakfasts is slowly but surely fading away. And after videos like these of spongy plastic omelets, I understand one thing: that's where they're headed.
