How do we do it? A work deadlock or just fed up – we go for a smoke. In smoking rooms, the fate of companies is decided, conflicts are resolved and stress is relieved. But there is an alternative. Richard Branson, the owner of the Virgin empire, does the same thing, only without nicotine.
The billionaire is constantly asked where he gets so much energy. People expect stories about vitamin drips, sleeping in a pressure chamber, or meditating at five in the morning. And he says tea. In any climate, anywhere.
And it's not about the caffeine or the taste at all. It's about putting the brakes on.
We're used to dragging work home, plowing without breaks, and feeling guilty for every minute we're not looking at the monitor. Branson thinks simpler: if you're devastated, don't give up, just walk away. Make a cup. These five minutes of silence allow you to look around, gather your thoughts, and not go crazy.
The British have actually made a system out of this. The kettle in their offices is an absolute analogue of our smoking room. A place where colleagues gather without work masks to exchange a few words, discuss a stupid idea, or just breathe. And that's where, according to Branson, the best business decisions are born. Without meetings and presentations.
So the next time you feel like quitting or going to smoke your third cigarette of the morning to relieve stress, maybe you should just put on a kettle. The function is the same – pause and restart. Only healthier.
