During an inquiry into a series of shootings in Toronto, one of which occurred at the United States consulate in March, a police officer was fatally shot while executing a search warrant on Thursday, according to officials.

The officer, 43-year-old Marc Pinizzotto, a member of the department's emergency task force, was "shot in the line of duty while conducting a search warrant early this morning," stated Toronto Police Service Chief Myron Demkiw at a press conference on Thursday.

The chief reported that Pinizzotto received emergency medical attention and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately passed away.

Law enforcement has not provided further details regarding the circumstances of the shooting. Demkiw mentioned that a suspect is currently in custody and is receiving urgent medical care at the hospital, without disclosing additional information about the individual.

The probe, which involved the search warrant and several other warrants executed on Thursday, "related to a number of shootings," including an incident at the U.S. consulate in Toronto on March 10, according to Demkiw.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing two individuals exit a white Honda CR-V and fire a handgun at the consulate before fleeing the scene, police stated. No injuries were reported during this event. Responding officers arrived after receiving a call about the shooting around 5:29 a.m. and discovered shell casings and damage to the building, police indicated.

A 19-year-old individual, sought in connection with the ongoing investigation, remains at large, Demkiw announced on Thursday.

The police chief identified the person of interest as Zara Jabbi and cautioned that he should be considered armed and dangerous.

"I implore you to surrender," Demkiw stated directly to the suspect during the briefing.
