Sydney drone crash

Sydney drone crash 2

I'm looking at the latest footage from Sydney. Night, crowds, the annual Vivid Sydney light festival. And instead of spectacular figures in the sky, there's high-tech rain. Almost 90 drones rained down from the air right into the harbor.

The British company Skymagic, which set all this up, is throwing up its hands: the radio frequency change failed. After takeoff, the equipment lost its coordinates. The emergency safety system worked, and the drones decided that the best solution was to land immediately. That is, go to the bottom of the bay and smash into a concrete pier.

Eyewitnesses say the noise from the impact on the cement was quite loud.

The Star-Bound show was planned on a grand scale: a thousand devices, 12 minutes in the air. It turned out to be shorter. The next two performances were canceled, and the British, together with local authorities, are sitting and assessing the risks.

The festival itself is a large-scale thing, it has been held since 2009. Six and a half kilometers of installations, projections on the Sydney Opera House. Last year, the organizers refused a drone show because they were afraid of a stampede. This year, the crowd gathered, but the equipment did not take off.

None of the spectators were injured, the iron fell clearly within the safety zone. The organizers apologized.
