According to unofficial information, the cause of Maestro's death was an old brain injury, aggravated by an embolism and various medical complications.

Miguel Canto, the fourth of nine siblings, grew up in Merida, Mexico, helping his father run a snack stand in a former movie theater. He initially dreamed of becoming a baseball player, but his dreams changed at age 14 after his older brother took him to see a boxing match between two local heroes, Silverio Ortiz and Carlos Navarrete.
