Playing is not always fun. Sometimes the rules are dictated by a mysterious puppeteer, and at stake is not just victory, but one's own life. This eerie scenario, forcing the characters to act at the limit of their capabilities, has become the basis for many cult thrillers. Here is a selection of films where the characters have to play by someone else's, deadly rules.
“Saw: The Game of Survival”, James Wan, 2004
A film that started a whole series of scary movies, from which, however, it is impossible to tear yourself away. The plot is simple: two men are chained to a pipe, and a mysterious kidnapper offers one of them to kill the other, otherwise his loved ones will die. The psychological tension and peculiar philosophy still do not leave many indifferent.
“Killing Words”, Laura Magna, 2003
The film begins with a young woman bound and locked in a basement. The kidnapper offers her a game of words, with her life at stake. During the game, unexpected details about the past and relationships of the characters are revealed, and this intellectual duel turns into a witty psychological thriller.
“Cube”, Vincenzo Natali, 1997
The famous film franchise has gone down in history largely due to its style: the heroes fight for survival in a futuristic labyrinth with many deadly traps, the origin of which is unknown. Viewers and critics appreciate the film for its sense of claustrophobia and impending nightmare, as well as for its intrigue and subtle allegories.
The Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hek, 2021-2025
Almost the entire world watched with bated breath as the fierce competition, where the losers face death and the winner faces immense wealth, was a cult Korean series that explored human nature for three seasons and sought to answer the question: how far can people go for a multi-billion dollar fortune?
“Hide and Seek”, Matthew Bettinelli, Tyler Gillette, 2019
In this comedy horror, the bride of an aristocratic heir learns about terrifying family traditions. Her first night in an old mansion turns into a nightmare, in which the heroine has only one goal – to survive until dawn, winning an unequal battle with her new relatives.
“Exit 8”, Genki Kawamura, 2025
A concise and stylish film based on the computer game of the same name, which has just been released. A young man is locked in a labyrinth of subway corridors and must play a game of attention: if he misses even one anomaly, he will return to the starting point. The hero will have to make every effort not to get lost and find exit number 8.
“The 8 Show”, Han Jae-rim, 2024
A Korean thriller-satire about eight participants locked in an eight-story building. The higher the floor, the more comfortable the conditions and the greater the “weight” in the game. Money is charged for time, but food and things have to be spent from a common bank, so alliances, betrayals and a rigid hierarchy are quickly born. The series asks uncomfortable questions about the price of survival, inequality and manipulation – and forces the viewer to decide where the rules of the game end and the boundaries of humanity begin.
