Books with quality love stories that won't make you sick

I like it when the love line, if the author has made it central, is written in a psychologically subtle, detailed, emotionally accurate way, without any banalities, illogicalities, and “pink snot”. It is very important for me that the actions of the characters are justified, and their characters are revealed from different sides, and not only from the side of feelings for each other. So today my list will include worthy novels about love with interesting plots.

Jack London “The Little Housekeeper”

The main character, since childhood, possessing a self-discipline that is characteristic of few, has built his life himself, directing it in the right direction. He has a perfect marriage with Paola, a woman without a single flaw. She miraculously combines intelligence, beauty, creativity, courage, it seems that there is nothing that is beyond her power.

But the perfect marriage is shattered when Dick's friend, Evan, arrives at the estate. And no matter how hard Paola tries to keep her distance, feelings arise between her and Evan that they cannot contain. The woman realizes that she loves them both, and does not know what to do, because she respects her husband and wants to protect his integrity.

Charlotte Bronte “Jane Eyre”

Everything in the novel is beautiful: the description of nature, the detailed characters, the subtle love story, the dialogues that convey every little emotion. I was never bored while reading. Yes, I didn't always agree with the heroine's actions, I didn't always agree with her religious views, but it's worth attributing all this to when this book was written and what social norms existed at that time.

Jane Eyre, a round orphan, who has a character that is completely incomprehensible to those around her. At first, she appears before us gloomy, withdrawn, quiet, but at the same time yearns for the love that she has not received since childhood. But gradually the facets of her character begin to reveal themselves to us more and more, and we understand what a pure soul this heroine has, and what inner strength she possesses.

Jane tells us her story, starting from her childhood: the difficulties of living with a cruel aunt and her children, studying at a strict religious school for girls, working as a governess at the gloomy Thornfield estate, whose inhabitants are clearly hiding something, and a fateful meeting with its mysterious owner. Life does not give the girl any indulgences, but she still fights for her own happiness.

Madeleine L'Engle Stedman “Light in the Ocean”

I think this book is the saddest of my entire collection, it broke my heart the entire time I was reading it.

The author tells the story of a lighthouse keeper and his young wife, who really want to have a child, but they can't. Fate throws them such an opportunity – a baby washes up on the shore, and they begin to take care of him as if he were their own, deciding not to tell anyone about this event. But, of course, all this leads to disastrous consequences.

This story is not only about the love of a young couple, but also about the price of choice and forgiveness.

Margaret Mitchell “Gone with the Wind”

“Gone with the Wind” is a historical romance novel. At first, the book attracts with very strong main characters, who, by the way, I don't like, but this doesn't spoil my impression of the book.

The action takes place during the American Civil War, when the slave-owning South was at war with the North, and the family of Scarlett, the main character, found themselves under attack, because they were quite wealthy and owned a large number of slaves.

The heroine is shown to us at a time when she has to survive, but she does not give up, she knows how to adapt to any situation – this is something you can't help but admire. Scarlett, who has a huge life force, and Rhett Butler, a self-confident and self-sufficient person, are perfect for each other.

For me, this story is very valuable due to the fact that I rarely come across books in which I don't like the images of the main characters, but at the same time I really like their relationship, which makes the novel addictive. I was involved in everything that was happening, I empathized, I was worried, I was happy – in general, I read with great interest.

Colin McCullough “Those Who Sing in the Thorns”

The novel's plot spans almost 55 years (from 1915 to 1969) and reveals the fates of three generations. The book is divided into seven parts, each of which characterizes one of the characters.

This is a novel about a young girl's forbidden love for a priest she has known since childhood. But the book is not only about love, but also about choice, because the priest has to choose: power, money, growth in the church hierarchy or a happy life with the girl he loves. That is, power or love? I remember very well how much this hero annoyed me and now I wonder how much my perception of the novel will change when I read it at a more mature age, when I have life experience behind me.

Joel Dicker “The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair”

This book precedes the novel “The Book of Baltimores.” In the detective story “The Truth About Harry Quebert”, the story is also told from the perspective of Marcus Goldman, a popular young writer who is trying to acquit and release from prison his former university professor, mentor and just friend Harry Quebert, who was accused of the murder of fifteen-year-old Nola Kellergan, committed 33 years ago.

The main character begins to investigate this case, while at the same time he writes a book about the events that took place in the summer of 1975 and led to the murder of a girl who was loved and considered an angel by everyone who knew her. The further he goes in his investigation, the more confusing it becomes, the hero faces various difficulties and obstacles, but this does not prevent him from finishing what he started.

What happened to Nola Kellergan? Who was she running from, and why was her body discovered in Harry Quebert's estate, thirty-three years after her disappearance? What was the connection between the great writer and the fifteen-year-old girl?
