But among the new books there are those that have been recognized as masterpieces, highly praised by critics, and delighted by readers. So modern literature is not only fantasy, Young Adult or nonsense novels. I have compiled a list of 4 books that have become modern classics for you.
Mariam Petrosyan “The House in Which…”
The house is a boarding school for disabled children abandoned by their parents. The main conflict of this work is how children who have spent their entire lives in the walls of the house will go outside, whether the house will let them go, whether they will be able to adapt to a new life. If a child was abandoned by his parents in early childhood, sent to a boarding school, and he has seen nothing but its walls and children like him, then for him this is the only comfortable environment, and everything outside is aggressive. That is why children do not want to leave home. For them, home is a whole world with its own rules and laws, they do not want to know what is outside it.
In this book, the plot is not the main thing, and it is simply impossible to retell it. What is the magic of this book? It tells about a pack, about acceptance, getting into this book, you feel a friendly shoulder, care. These children are not needed by the rest of the world, their parents have given up on them, teachers don't care about them, but they themselves take care of each other. And this care is in absolutely everything. The author does not emphasize the fact that the children are disabled, she does not show them weak, helpless, abandoned.
This novel is so poignantly written that it is simply fascinating, you can look at it from different angles, discovering new and new meanings for yourself. Everyone can find something of their own in this book, everyone has their own vision of this work.
Fanny Flagg “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Stop Cafe”
The action of this book develops in several storylines. The first storyline revolves around the cafe “Zupinka”, which is founded by two friends. The author tells about the fates of not only the owners of the cafe, but also all its residents. In the second storyline, the author tells about an elderly woman who lives in a nursing home and tells her new acquaintance what happened in this cafe.
The book intertwines many issues: racism, lack of money during the Great Depression, unfair treatment of women. A very interesting work for those who like stories about life, full of philosophy, presented with a certain amount of humor.
Ganya Yanagigara “A Little Life”
This book was called the top novel of 2016, it was recognized as the best book on Amazon, and it was also called an international bestseller.
The book tells the story of four friends: one of them is an architect, another is an actor, the third is an artist, and there is also a lawyer-mathematician who is somewhat out of this creative company. They all live in New York and are trying to get back on their feet.
Once you read page 60, the story changes dramatically, and it's no longer about the four friends, but about one of them in particular, namely a lawyer-mathematician named Jude. It is he who has some skeletons in the closet from his past.
Mary Ann Schaeffer and Annie Burroughs “The Potato Peel Pie Book Club”
This novel is written entirely in letters. It all starts in 1946, in London. The main character Juliet, a young writer, wrote a book during the war years using humor, but so skillfully that it did not hurt the feelings of either the military or ordinary people. Juliet is simply incredible, she has a wonderful sense of humor, she attracts people from the first letters. It is impossible not to love her. Reading her books, people were filled with hope, bright feelings and emotions. Of course, the main character is loved and they expect her to write something else.
It turns out that a man who lives on the island finds her address in one of the books and writes her a letter. In his letter, he talks about himself and the people around him, about the book club they opened back in the war years. Juliet gets a great idea – to write a book about these wonderful people.
This is exactly the case when you wish there were more pages in the book!
