Ben O'Connor is being considered as a frontrunner to take over as head coach of the Cork County senior hurling team.
Following Pat Ryan's announcement on Saturday that he would be stepping down from his post, O'Connor has emerged as a leading contender for the role.
The three-member taskforce responsible for finding a new manager, comprising Cork council chairman Pat Horgan, his deputy Noel O'Callaghan and managing secretary Kevin O'Donovan, is expected to make a formal recommendation in favour of O'Connor on Thursday.
Final approval of the nomination is due to take place at a scheduled meeting of Cork County Council scheduled for next Tuesday at the SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh complex.
As a player, O'Connor won league titles with Cork in 1999, 2004 and 2005, and captained the team in one season.
While with Newtownshandrum, he helped win four County Championship titles (2000, 2003, 2005, 2009), three Munster Provincial Club Trophies and the 2003-04 National Club Championship. He was named in the prestigious All-Star Game twice (2006, 2008).
Three years ago, O'Connor took over the U20s after Ryan's departure and led the team to victory in the 2023 All-Ireland Championship.
He previously achieved success as mentor to Charleville's County Championship-winning secondary side and also served as coach at Midleton during their 2021 SHC Premier Championship triumph.
