Brentford beat Bournemouth in League Cup

Brentford manager Keith Andrews recorded his second success in four days as his side beat Bournemouth 2-0 in the Premier League League Cup.

Fabio Carvalho and substitute Igor Thiago scored to secure their team a place in the third stage of the tournament, while their opponents finished the match without a full squad.

Bournemouth's squad included summer signings Ben Gannon-Doak and Amin Adli given their first full debuts, while Bees defender Aaron Hickey, recently called up to the Scotland squad, was named in the starting line-up for the first time in two years.

Already in the second minute the hosts created the first dangerous moment: Junior Krupi's shot, aimed at the bottom corner, was parried with difficulty by Hakon Valdimarsson.

The crossbar saved Brentford after Julio Soler's deflected shot hit the left post, leaving the goalkeeper without a chance.

Liverpool youth product Carvalho almost opened the scoring midway through the half, narrowly beating the goalkeeper with a long-range shot from the edge of the area.

Eleven minutes before the break, the same player finally scored, finishing off a pass from Rico Henry from the flank, and adding to the success with a precise shot into the far corner.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola brought on attacking leader Antoine Semenyo at the start of the second half in the hope of turning the tide of the match.

Henry, who has rarely featured since late September, was again solid at left-back, setting up a goal for Frank Onyeka after the break, but he was unable to convert a risky back-heel attempt.

Former Bayer Leverkusen player Adli's long-awaited debut in England was lacklustre, although his powerful shot almost beat Valdimarsson in the 54th minute.

Defender James Hill soon missed an opportunity to level the scores, sending the ball over the bar from a good position after a Christie free-kick.

Shortly before the 60th minute, Hickey made way for the club's record signing, former Bournemouth forward Dango Auttare.

Valdimarsson saved the day when Nathan Collins nearly scored an own goal from Alex Scott's cross.

The price for Bournemouth's missed chances came in the 65th minute as substitute Thiago doubled Brentford's lead.

Onyeka intercepted a pass from Scott deep in the field, sent Carvalho into the penalty area, where he led three defenders behind him and assisted Thiago for the finish from eight meters.

Evanilson saved one goal-line goal and Valdimarsson saved another as the hosts tried unsuccessfully to save the game.

Bournemouth were left with ten men in injury time after Julian Araujo was sent off for a second yellow card for a rough tackle on Thiago.
