Viktoria Mboko lost to Barbora Krejcikova in a three-set clash, while two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova played her final professional match. The US Open is available live on Sky Sports Tennis, Sky Sports+, NOW and the Sky Sports app until September 7.
Key moments of the first round of the US Open between Victoria Mboko and Barbora Krejcikova
Young tennis player Victoria Mboko suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova at the start of the American major.
Despite her recent sensational victory at the Canadian Open, a wrist injury is likely to limit Mboko's chances against an experienced opponent.
The 18-year-old used athletic tape on her palm, which she removed in the second set, but was unable to repeat the level of play that had previously allowed her to beat Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka.

“The wrist problem has been seriously affecting her game and it's important that she gets on with her recovery,” Martina Navratilova said on Sky Sports:
“It is critical for a tennis player to maintain healthy wrist condition.
“If the situation was so serious, why go out on court? The exact nature of the injury is unknown, but it was obviously affecting the result.”
Mboko immediately lost serve after two double faults in the first game and continued to make unforced misses all over the court.
At 3-2, she had a chance to win back her opponent's serve, but failed to capitalize on it, which led to the loss of a game at the end of the set.
Repeated mistakes at the start of the second set allowed Krejcikova to strengthen her lead, and the lack of a return break determined the outcome of the match. The decisive break ensured the Czech tennis player’s entry into the second round, where she will meet Moyuka Uchijima from Japan.

“The results she [Mboko] has already achieved are impressive, especially the game in Montreal. I was sincerely happy about her success and wish her further progress,” Krejcikova noted.
“I played confidently today and I am pleased with my overall development.”

End of Kvitova's career
Exciting moments from Petra Kvitova vs. Diane Parry at US Open
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has retired from professional tennis after a 6-1 6-0 defeat to Diane Parry.
The 35-year-old, who announced her retirement in June after the US Open, lost in dominant style.
Kvitova won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2011, defeating Maria Sharapova, and repeated the success in 2014, defeating Eugenie Bouchard.
Kvitova showed no emotion as she reflected on her career achievements after the final match.
After the match, Kvitova shared her feelings with her support team.
“I didn't expect tears, but waking up in the morning brought awareness of what was happening. It felt different. I couldn't eat because of the excitement. It was a special kind of nervous tension,” she admitted.
“Physically, it was impossible to perform the usual actions! An extremely difficult experience. The thought of the last match became clear only during the process, which added emotional stress.
“It was hard to comprehend the finality of the moment. Now a new life begins. I am satisfied with the decision I made.”
Keys' unexpected defeat
Vivid moments of the meeting of Madison Keys and Renata Sarasua
Sixth seed Madison Keys made a surprise exit from the tournament, losing to Mexico's Renata Zarazua in three sets: 6-7 (10-12), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.
The 2024 Australian Open winner made 89 unforced errors, including 14 double faults, to become the highest-ranked player to quit a women's singles tournament.

“I was overwhelmed with emotions – I could barely hold back tears from excitement, but the support of the audience helped me pull myself together… I am grateful to those who stayed until the end,” shared Sarasua.
“My game is not always consistent, which can be tiring for spectators. The Mexican fans and my colleagues in the doubles competitions created a special atmosphere of support.”
Elena Rybakina started the tournament confidently, defeating Julieta Pareja in 60 minutes: 6-3, 6-0.
