Evan Ferguson continued his impressive pre-season by earning the Serie A man of the match award on Saturday following his side's narrow 1-0 win over Bologna.
Despite not adding to his goal tally, Ferguson remained dangerous throughout the game, confirming his recognition as the match's hero.
After a bright start at Brighton, the 20-year-old has struggled to get back to his previous level, making a move to Roma a key step for him.
Ferguson spent 74 minutes on the field before giving way to Artem Dovbyk.
His performance was a big signal for Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson, who will announce his squad on Tuesday ahead of matches against Hungary and Armenia.
“He showed a confident performance and his form is gradually improving,” said Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
“He rarely appeared on the field last season and is still adapting, but he has already demonstrated key skills for the team.
“These are young people with a lot of potential for development. In the match with Bologna they confirmed their level and the team's cohesion.”
“I saw it during pre-season training, especially in away games in full stadiums where it’s hard to stay focused.
“He (Ferguson) has serious prospects and in the future he can become a pillar of support for us.”
