Matthew Fitzpatrick heads into the final round of the Betfred British Masters with a one-point lead as Rasmus Hoegaard tries to secure a direct spot in Europe's Ryder Cup squad.

Fitzpatrick, who will need to be captain Luke Donald's choice to make Team Europe at Bethpage Black next month, finished with a 68 at Belfry to move to -12 for the tournament and extend his lead with a lucky eagle on the 15th hole.

The former US Open and 2015 British Masters champion is one point ahead of Alexander Noren and two ahead of Nicolas Højgaard and Marco Penge.

Discussing the possibility of winning the tournament again, Fitzpatrick said: “It would be incredible. Especially after a decade of success. It's nice to have confidence in the game and know that the odds are good.”

Rasmus Hoigaard needs to finish in the top 29 to pass Shane Lowry for the guaranteed sixth spot on the European team. Lowry, who is playing in the PGA Tour's Tour Championship, has no chance to increase his points this week.

Rasmus, whose twin brother Nikolai competed in the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, is tied for 14th going into the final 18 holes after a third-round 69 that included an eagle and double bogey.

Penge puts on a dazzling performance

Fitzpatrick's success will please Donald, as will the performance of England's Penge, who is seeking a third title of the season and his second in recent weeks. He equalled the Belfry Course record with a 63, nine strokes under par.

Penge had nine birdies in Saturday's round, four of which came in the first five holes.
