Former England manager Gareth Southgate said he has no plans to return to coaching and was surprised by rumours of possible cooperation with the Polish national team this season.
More than a year has passed since his successful eight-year career in charge of the national team ended with defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Under Southgate's management, England have reached the final stages of the European Championships twice in a row and have also reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the World Cup since his appointment in 2016, replacing the youth team.
The 54-year-old athlete, while away from the field, hinted that potential activities could involve football, but stressed that there is no rush to return to a leadership position.
“I'm enjoying life at the moment,” Southgate told PA news agency. “My days are filled with different projects.
“I'm writing a book, developing business areas. I'm mentoring trainers, working on leadership programs.
“This leaves time for travel, golf and paddle tennis. The balance between work and leisure is perfect.”
Asked about the possibility of a managerial return, he said: “Past decisions teach you to keep your options open. After leaving Middlesbrough 15 years ago, I had doubts about my future in this role.”
“Fate led me to work with national teams. However, such plans do not appeal to me now.”
Southgate's possible appointment has raised eyebrows in Poland, with speculation swirling in June that he might take charge of the local team.
“I've long been accustomed to such news,” he noted regarding the rumors. “The Polish version came as a complete surprise to me.”
“Information spreads instantly, but there are probably other unannounced versions. For now, I take it as part of the game.”
At the PFA Awards ceremony in Manchester, Southgate was presented with the PFA Merit Award for his contribution to football and his achievements with the England national team.
Thomas Tuchel, the current coach of the team, is determined to continue the successful tradition and win the World Cup next year. He also attended the event at the Manchester Opera House.
“There's a lot of talent in the squad,” Southgate said of the current squad. “There are always some promising young players coming through and refreshing the squad.”
“It is important not to overload him with advice so as not to interfere with Thomas's work.”
