Rico Lewis is determined to fight for his place in the Manchester City team, who he believes have an “extra hunger” to regain the Premier League title this season.
The England international provided the assist as City launched their bid for a seventh title in nine years with a 4-0 win over Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.
The move comes amid speculation that the 20-year-old could join Nottingham Forest, but despite manager Pep Guardiola repeatedly stressing his desire to trim the squad, Lewis has no intention of leaving.
The City academy graduate said: “I never imagined myself at any other club. It was always my dream to play for City.”
“This is my dream club and as you can see (here), when I play with players like this it allows me to show my best qualities and that’s why I’m so happy.
“Everyone strives for confidence and composure, but ultimately it's up to me to decide what to do. It's up to me to decide whether to take risks or not. After that, I can't blame myself.
“If I take a risk, I do it. If not, I need to work and develop.”
After losing the title last season after winning four in a row, City started the new season with a strong statement.
Erling Haaland scored after both of Tijani Reynders' strikes, and substitute Ryan Cerki later added a fourth.
Reynders also played a key role in both of Haaland's goals in a highly impressive Premier League debut.
Lewis said: “We try to forget about last season as quickly as possible, but of course it's in the back of our minds somewhere and you could say it adds fuel to the fire.”
