Saturday Briefing: Antoine Semenyo's alleged racist abuse mars Liverpool's win

Liverpool's Premier League win over Bournemouth was overshadowed by alleged racist abuse directed at winger Antoine Semenyo.

The Premier League is launching a full investigation after a brief stoppage in the first half saw Semenyo score both of the Cherries' goals in their 4-2 defeat.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe believes striker Alexander Isak still has the ability to play for the club, but it depends on the player himself.

Premier League to launch investigation into racist incidents

The Premier League has confirmed a full investigation will be launched after Liverpool's match against Bournemouth at Anfield was abandoned following reports of racist abuse by striker Semenyo.

Referee Taylor stopped play after 29 minutes and spoke to managers Arne Sloot and Andoni Iraola, after which captains Virgil van Dijk and Adam Smith were called to the dugout.

A Premier League statement said: “The match between Liverpool Football Club and AFC Bournemouth was temporarily abandoned during the first half following reports of discriminatory abuse from spectators directed at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo.

This is in line with the Premier League's anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at Anfield will be thoroughly investigated. We provide our full support to both the player and both clubs.

Merseyside Police said a 47-year-old man had been arrested and investigations were underway after his identity was confirmed.
