Andy Moran will be Mayo's new first-team manager following the completion of the appointments process, joining Colm Boyle and Paddy Talley in his team.
An executive meeting of Mayo County Council was called on Monday evening after interviews were held last week with two candidates for the position – 2017 Footballer of the Year Moran and Armagh All-Ireland champion Tony McEntee.
Following the meeting, Mayo GAA said Moran's appointment would be discussed at the next county board meeting. He will be joined by his former team-mate Boyle and Talley, who recently stepped down as Derry manager after just eight months in the job.
Moran replaces Kevin McStay, who was relieved of his post in June last year after three years in charge.
Moran retired from inter-county football in 2019 having made 183 league and Championship appearances for Mayo. He was a two-time All-Star and eight-time Connacht Champion.
Following his retirement, Moran was appointed manager of Leitrim in 2021. The team achieved promotion from Division Four in 2024. That same year, he took charge of the county's under-20 team, leading them to victory over his home county in the Connacht under-20 championship.
After leaving Leitrim, Moran became manager of Monaghan, who reached the quarter-finals of the Irish Championship, where they lost to Donegal.
Mayo had a poor season. They reached the Division One League final, where they lost to Kerry, and then lost the Connacht final to rivals Galway. A group stage defeat to Cavan ultimately prevented them from reaching the play-offs.
Mayo GAA described the recruitment process as “comprehensive and robust”, adding that “the level of interest and quality of candidates once again underlines the strength and reputation of the Mayo football team”.
