Dean Henderson saved two penalties as Crystal Palace held off a Liverpool attack to win the Community Shield on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Wembley.
Henderson saved from Alexis McAllister and Harvey Elliott after Mohamed Salah's opener was denied as the Eagles added another trophy to their collection by lifting their first major trophy, the FA Cup, in May.
Liverpool new signing Hugo Ekitiike opened the scoring on his competitive debut in the fourth minute, heading home a pass from fellow new signing Florian Wirtz, before Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised with a successful penalty in the 17th minute.
The Premier League champions, managed by Arne Slot, restored their lead four minutes later through another debutant, Jeremie Frimpong, but Ismaila Sarr equalised again in the 77th minute and a penalty was awarded.
Justin Devenney gave the Eagles a 3-2 win in a tense shootout.
Before the match, a minute's silence was held in memory of former Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash in Spain on July 3, including the laying of wreaths and a standing ovation.
The minute's silence was broken by shouts from a small group of Palace fans.
Liverpool took the lead as the smoke from red torches lit by Palace fans began to clear and a banner reading “UEFA Mafia” was raised – a reference to the team's relegation to the Conference League due to multiple possession rules.
The Slot newcomers put in a great performance, with Milos Kerkez and Wirtz pushing forward before the latter found Ekitieck, who played a precise pass to Wirtz on the edge of the 18-yard box.
The Germany international then played a short pass along the edge of the penalty area to Ekitiek, who fired past a diving Henderson into the bottom right corner of the goal.
However, the advantage was short-lived as Virgil van Dijk brought down Sarr and referee Chris Kavanagh had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.
