Fallen Angel Wins Group 1 Prix Rothschild Again

Danny Tudhope partnered the outstanding Spigot Lodge-trained horse in his quest to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas last season. The pair were not far behind in Group 1 races but looked vulnerable when Aidan O'Brien's January and Exactly loomed large.

Carl Burke was delighted to see Fallen Angel enter the elite circle with a superb fight to edge out January and win the Prix Rothschild at Deauville.

January proved to be the main rival and when Fallen Angel began the battle with her Ballydoyle rival it appeared that Christophe Soumillon had the advantage aboard the Falmouth Stakes runner-up.

However, Fallen Angel did not give up and showed the resilience that has been a hallmark of her career, regaining the advantage and winning at the very last moment.

It was the first time she had achieved success under the Wathnan Racing banner, but with her third victory at the top level she joined Lawrence in winning major races in three successive seasons for the Middleham-based trainer.

Burke said: “She's a wonderful mare and she's now a Group 1 winner in classes two, three and four, just like Lawrence, and I think it's a huge achievement to produce two such wonderful mares.”

“I was a bit surprised that James Doyle didn't pick her (over Crimson Advocate) and I told him she had been working beautifully since Ascot, especially in the last few mornings.

“We put cheek caps on her today because she's a bit older now and has been galloping at Middleham for a few years and her work has become a bit sluggish.
