England Euro 2025 Champions: Red Roses Take Inspiration From Lionesses For Home World Cup

The Red Roses approach the home World Cup with renewed vigor following the Lionesses' success and will be hoping to continue a successful summer in women's sport as they seek their first world title since 2014. England face Spain in a friendly in Leicester on Saturday, with the tournament kicking off on August 22.

The England Women's Rugby team have been given extra motivation and inspiration by the Lionesses' achievement at the European Championships as they make final preparations for the World Cup at home.

The Red Roses will arrive at the tournament in August with renewed energy and hope to continue a great summer for women's sport.

England are clear favourites to win a first World Cup title since 2014 and are brimming with confidence after 25 straight wins and a seventh successive Six Nations title in April.

Their most recent defeat came in the 2022 World Cup final, when they went down 34-31 despite playing with a man down after Lydia Thompson was sent off in the 18th minute.

The pressure of being clear favourites is similar to what the Lionesses felt ahead of the 2022 European Championships at home, and Sarina Wiegman's side dealt with it to win the first of two European trophies in a row.

The Red Roses will now aim to maintain positive momentum this summer, live up to expectations and lift the World Cup at what is expected to be a packed Allianz Stadium on Saturday 27 September.

“What the Lionesses are doing is absolutely fantastic,” Red Roses captain Zoe Aldcroft told a packed Twickenham press conference on what is expected to be the biggest media gathering for England men's and women's teams ahead of the tournament.

We watched their match against Italy [in the semi-final] and we were behind them. It's amazing how the whole country is behind them and we want to build on that momentum and achieve that goal.

England centre Meg Jones added: “People talk about the Lionesses inspiring a nation of young girls but we are grown women and we are inspired every time we watch them.”

England manager John Mitchell sees similarities between the Lionesses and the Red Roses, saying: “The Lionesses have shown strong qualities and values in both tournaments. I think we have a lot of those in our squad.”
