Gary Neville says UK business environment 'really tough'

Former footballer and businessman Gary Neville said conditions were “really tough” for UK companies due to rising costs and low profitability.

After finishing his career with England and Manchester United, he built up a significant business empire, including commercial property, hotels and media projects.

On Tuesday, Mr Neville was also appointed as a brand ambassador for business software company Sage as part of a new long-term partnership with the English Football League (EFL).

He told the PA news agency there were “huge opportunities” for football clubs and businesses to work together to drive growth in different parts of the UK.

Mr Neville said: “The impact Football League clubs, crowds and attendances have on the local economy and business is enormous. And that's not just financially, it's also about the spirit of the town and village.”

“A successful football club and a thriving club can certainly have a significant impact on small businesses in a nearby town.

“Local businesses benefit from community matches and a successful team that plays more home games can earn more money as making money for local businesses is an extremely difficult task that requires ongoing support.”

However, he stressed that it was currently a “challenging” time to do business in the UK due to recent sharp rises in costs and pressure on consumer demand.

The Sky Sports pundit has several businesses under his belt, including League Two club Salford City, which he owns as part of a group that also includes David Beckham and American businessman Declan Kelly.

“It's tough. It's really tough because food prices have gone up, everything has gone up, utilities, rent, everything has gone up,” Mr Neville said.

“It’s tough right now: there are certain sectors where it’s difficult to operate, simply because of the increased costs and the fact that people are finding it difficult to find the funds to support local businesses.”

His collaboration with Sage began when the company became EFL's official accounting software partner.

The group has launched a new campaign in the UK to support local businesses, with fans of all 72 EFL clubs able to nominate matchday heroes in their communities.

Steve Hare, CEO of Sage, said: “We have been supporting small businesses in the UK since our foundation, including many football clubs across the country.

“It's just wonderful to bring all this together to support small businesses that provide a football experience every week.”

Mr Neville added: “As a player and now an owner, I have seen how important these businesses are. I am proud to be working with Sage to recognise their contribution and help them grow.”
