Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stressed that the club are not looking to sell unwanted players for next to nothing and are open to bringing them back if the need arises.
Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Anthony and Tyrell Malacia were absent from the US tour (Marcus Rashford has since joined Barcelona on loan) while the so-called 'bomber squad' trained at the club's Carrington complex.
United's transfers have come under heavy criticism in recent years and Amorim has said that chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox will not allow themselves to be carried out simply to offload players.
“Some players need to find a new place to get more opportunities in the team, while others clearly show a desire to take on new challenges and join other teams,” Amorim said at a press conference ahead of the Premier League Summer Series match against West Ham on Saturday.
“We are simply giving these players time to think and make decisions. If there comes a time when they have to return to the team, they will return because they are our players.
“I am absolutely sure that these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a certain price for these players. If that is not met, they will remain Manchester United players, there is no doubt about that.
“I understand that clubs can wait until the last minute, but they can surprise, and I am ready. I am ready to accept the players.
“They have more competition – if they want to play in the World Cup, they have to perform, so I'm very happy about that because I have more opportunities. If they have to fight each other for a place in the squad, that's perfect for me.”
United have spent around £130m on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon but are still actively looking for a defensive midfielder and a striker.
However, previous transfer mistakes have forced United to tread more cautiously this summer.
“At the moment, our club needs to be very careful when signing contracts with players,” Amorim added.
