Trump says supporters 'love' him more than ever despite Iran disagreement

Donald Trump has dismissed any suggestion that his supporters have become less loyal to him amid uncertainty over a possible US military strike on Iran, pointing to differences between some of his loyalists and conservative circles over national security issues.

“Today, my supporters love me even more, and I love them even more, even more than during the election, when we won so completely,” the president told reporters as the new flagpole was installed at the White House.

“Some people might be a little bit unhappy, but there are some who are very happy, and there are some who are not in our base but can't believe it's happening, they're so happy,” he added.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Wednesday that the Pentagon was giving Mr. Trump options on Iran but would not say whether the military would support Israel in carrying out attacks.

“I may or may not do it,” Mr. Trump said on Wednesday. “I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do.”

Some longtime defenders of his “America First” slogan have criticized him for considering an expanded U.S. role in the conflict between Israel and Iran after a week of deadly attacks, reminding his audience of Trump’s 2024 pledges to resist foreign interference.

Steve Bannon, a senior adviser to Trump during his 2016 campaign, told a Washington audience that strong feelings about Iraq were the driving force behind Trump's first presidential run and the “Make America Great Again” movement, adding that “one of the core principles is no forever wars.”
