Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic will miss the Club World Cup after undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon.
Earlier this month, Kovacic was unable to play in Crystal Palace's FA Cup final defeat due to injury.
He returned for the Premier League match against Bournemouth but was sent off and missed the final game of the season against Fulham.
City have now confirmed that the 31-year-old has required surgery. No timeframe has been set for his recovery, but all eyes are now on next season.
A club statement said: “The Croatian midfielder is likely to miss the FIFA Club World Cup as City travel to the USA in June.
“Mateo will spend the summer recovering from his surgery and everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.”
City will play Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in their first FIFA Club World Cup game in Philadelphia on June 18. They also have group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus.
The tournament, which involves 32 teams, will end on July 13.
