Exit polls in the second round of Poland's presidential election show the outcome of the race is too close to draw conclusions

Exit polls in the second round of Poland's presidential election showed both candidates on equal footing, but the situation remains too tense for firm conclusions in a country with deep internal divisions.

The results could have a significant impact on the country's political course and its relations with the European Union.

The first exit poll showed a slight lead for Warsaw's liberal mayor Rafal Trzaskowski over conservative historian Karol Nawrocki, but two hours later an updated “late poll” showed Mr Nawrocki leading with 50.7 per cent, while Mr Trzaskowski had 49.3 per cent of the vote.

Polls are subject to error, and it is currently unclear who has won.

While the final results are still uncertain, with both candidates neck and neck, both men have claimed victory at meetings with supporters in Warsaw.

“We have won,” Mr Trzaskowski told supporters at an event on election day.

“This is a truly important moment in the history of Poland. I am convinced that it will allow us to move forward and focus on the future. I will be your president.”

Mr Nawrocki, addressing supporters at a separate event in Warsaw, suggested he was on track to win.

“We will win and save Poland,” he said. “We must win tonight.”

Final results are expected on Monday.
