The Hypocrisy of Bruce Springsteen

The famous rock star has been diagnosed with a severe form of Trump syndrome.

I love Bruce Springsteen. My first concert with him was in 1977. I never get tired of listening to “Born to Run” or “Ghost of Tom Joad.”

However, lately I feel very disappointed that my hero has succumbed to Trump syndrome (TST) and switched from important discussions about small-p political issues like poverty, veterans support and social injustice to politics as it is presented on Sunday morning talk shows. The boss has fallen for the mainstream media's claim that democracy in the US should be spoken of in the past tense.

Earlier this month, Springsteen reiterated his earlier comments about President Donald Trump while performing in Manchester. “My homeland America, the America I wrote about, which has been a symbol of hope and freedom for 250 years, is now in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration,” Springsteen said. “Tonight, we call on all who believe in democracy and the best of our American spirit to join us, to raise our voices and stand against authoritarianism, and to let freedom ring.”

He later made similar remarks on the same show, saying, “There's some really weird, weird, dangerous shit going on in this country right now. People are being persecuted in America for exercising their right to free speech and dissent. It's happening now. They're taking people off American streets without due process and sending them to foreign detention centers as prisoners. It's happening now. The majority of our elected representatives have completely failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unacceptable president and a rogue government. They don't care or care about what it means to be a real American.”

He closed the evening’s performance with “Chimes of Freedom,” an old Bob Dylan tune that Springsteen had poignantly performed years earlier in East Germany at one of the first rock concerts allowed by the former communist regime. Any serious Springsteen fan listening to it will understand the message. For those unfamiliar with the song, “Chimes of Freedom” uses the metaphor of chimes to represent enlightenment. The song describes the transition from darkness to light, with the chimes signaling a better future for those seeking freedom. If you’re Bruce Springsteen and want to protest Trump, here’s how.

Trump, of course, has gotten in on the act, calling Springsteen “grossly overrated,” “dumb as a rock,” “an annoying, obnoxious jerk,” and “a dried-up rocker (his skin is all atrophied!)” on Truth Social. Trump has vowed to investigate whether Springsteen (and other celebrities like Oprah) were paid to endorse Kamala Harris in the last presidential election. Springsteen was paid $75,000 to perform at a Harris rally, which could be seen as compensation for the endorsement. Springsteen has previously endorsed other Democratic candidates, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry.

To criticize Bruce is to mock God, but that’s exactly what’s happening. His professed affection for workers, immigrants, and the oppressed seems a little hypocritical when you consider that his net worth is over $1.2 billion. As his fortune has grown, so has his audience. Springsteen once found a home in middle America, but that’s no longer the case. The left, realizing that “Born in the USA” isn’t exactly a patriotic anthem, has embraced Bruce.
