West Ham end season with win over relegated Ipswich

Ipswich were relegated from the Premier League title after just one season in the top flight, losing 3-1 to West Ham in the final match of the season at Portman Road.

Town provided the opening goal through James Ward-Prowse shortly before half-time following a dreadful back pass from captain Sam Morsy.

They levelled just after the break through Nathan Broadhead but the parity lasted just three minutes before Jarrod Bowen restored West Ham's lead and Mohamed Kudus finished the match with three minutes remaining.

It was Town's ninth defeat in a row after a poor season, and they have won just four games this term: three away – against Tottenham, Wolves and Bournemouth – and just one at home – against Chelsea.

Meanwhile, West Ham finished the season in 14th place.

Town defender Axel Tuanzebe's pass almost set up a goal for Christian Walton, while at the other end Omari Hutchinson's shot was saved by Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Broadhead forced a fine save from Fabianski and Morsy fired low from outside the area.

Niklas Fullkrug clashed with Dara O'Shea in the penalty area and the Hammers striker claimed he had been fouled but referee Tim Robinson rejected his request for a penalty.

Walton saved the hosts' chance by deflecting Bowen's shot and the ball rebounded to Ward-Prowse, but his attempt was blocked by the Ipswich defence.

Hutchinson hit the left post of the West Ham goal when O'Shea found him from the right, but the offside flag was raised and the Tractor Boys conceded a goal in the 43rd minute through a fatal error.

Tuanzebe's throw-in found Morsy and he fed the ball to a free Bowen, who passed to Ward-Prowse and the West Ham midfielder converted.

Ipswich equalised in the 52nd minute through a fine strike from Broadhead. The Welshman collected the ball from Jens Cajuste and raced into the penalty area before firing an unstoppable shot past Fabianski.

The Hammers were back in front three minutes later after Bowen played a one-two with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and fired past Walton.

Soon after coming on as substitutes, Jack Clarke and Liam Delap combined to almost level the scores at 2-2, with Clarke's intricate run and shot across the box almost resulting in a goal as the ball went inches wide.

Kudus scored the Hammers' third goal, exchanging passes with Guido Rodriguez and firing a shot past Walton, while at the other end Clarke fired a six-yard pass that found Hutchinson, who narrowly missed the target.

Massimo Luongo and Aaron Cresswell took to the pitch to play their final games for both teams, to loud applause from fans on both sides at the end of the game.
