Singapore's long-ruling party on course for another landslide victory

Sample vote count results released by Singapore's Elections Department showed the long-time ruling People's Action Party (PAP) again clinched a landslide victory in Saturday's general election.

The count shows the People's Action Party (PAP) firmly in the lead in 82 of the 93 seats.

Earlier, the party also won five seats without competition, increasing the PAP's total number of seats to 87 in the expanded parliament.

Following the 2020 elections, the party took 83 seats.

A sample count showed the opposition Workers' Party holding on to 10 seats.

The result will strengthen Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's lead in his first election test since taking office a year ago.

The count is based on a random sample of 100 ballots from each polling station. The results are not final and are intended to reduce speculation and misinformation during the vote-counting process. Full results are expected later Saturday.

The MHP had been expected to extend its 66-year rule in the city-state without much difficulty, but the election is being closely watched to see whether the opposition can make further gains amid discontent with the government's tight grip and high living costs.

Mr Wong, a US-trained economist who is also finance minister, called for decisive action to support trade-reliant Singapore amid economic uncertainty caused by increased tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

The government has cut its trade forecast and warned of a possible recession.
