There is a grave risk of multiple casualties after gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said. Police described it as a “terrorist attack” and blamed it on militants opposed to Indian rule.
“This attack is far beyond any previous violence against civilians in recent years,” Omar Abdullah, a senior elected official in the region, said on social media.
“The number of victims is still being determined, so I'm not going to go into details,” he added.
Gunmen allegedly opened fire on tourists, mostly Indian, who were in the Baisaran meadows, about three miles (5 km) from the resort town of Pahalgam in the disputed region. Police said several tourists were shot and wounded and authorities were evacuating the injured to hospitals.
Police and military surrounded the area and began searching for the attackers.
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah is heading to Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir, where he said he would assess the situation.
Mr Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, was informed about the incident.
