Amy Sherald “Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance)”

Save this storySave this storySave this storySave this story

Artist Amy Sherald is known for her haunting portraits of First Lady Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor, often using grayscale tones to deepen the perception of race in her portraiture. Sherman’s first cover, for the March 24, 2025 issue, features a woman in Sherald’s signature style, but the viewer’s eye is drawn primarily to the large teacup in the foreground. Sherald also enjoys adding props and costumes to expand her narratives into fantastical dimensions; she cites Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as an inspiration for this work. Her first solo museum exhibition, American Sublime, opens at the Whitney on April 9.

Below are additional tea-themed covers:

“July 18, 1959” by Mary Petty

“February 2, 1987” by Ronald Searle
