Meath pub changes prices for two years: 'It'll feel like 2023 all over again'

A Meath pub owner has decided to set his prices back to two years ago because he is “tired” of price increases from suppliers.

The Royal Meath pub in Navan has reduced the price of pints of some draught beers by 50c three days a week. The move has caused quite a stir.

The owners said in a statement: “We have been offering the people of Navan great value drinks for nearly 60 years.”

“It is becoming more and more difficult to do this every month, as suppliers have increased their prices three times in the last few months.

“To make life a little easier for our customers, we're offering 50c off pints of Guinness, Heineken, Coors, Carlsberg, Harp, Rockshore Lager and Smithwicks Monday to Thursday! (Pub closed Tuesdays).

“It's going to feel like 2023 all over again! So support your local pub landlords and come along midweek for a chat and a pint!”

Pub owner Peter Geraghty said the decision was made to support customers and preserve the city centre venue, which also serves as a venue for music events.

“Pub landlords need to continually reassess the need to keep their doors open given rising operating costs,” he explained.

“A lot of places are turning into gastropubs. We offer a few types of pizza, but mostly we stay true to our traditional style, which has retained much of its charm since my parents opened the pub in 1968.

“Monday to Thursday is usually quiet and peaceful, and we have music four nights a week, free entry for our customers, so we have to pay the musicians and cover all the running costs, from wages to prices. I would say there are very few pubs today that make a significant profit.”

“We have to maintain a certain price level to stay afloat, but with three price increases this year, it's too much to ask customers to fork out. So we're trying to find the right balance. Keeping open, keeping jobs and customers.”

“Our Guinness is €5.80 and our lager is €6.60 a pint, which is competitively priced, especially for a music pub. And now customers can get 50c off a pint for a week on certain products, as well as chatting to people.”

Drinks giants Diageo and Heineken announced their latest price increases in January and February, adding around
